Oral Surgery

Not every patient requires oral surgery before implant placement, but some do. Tooth loss and gum disease often lead to bone loss over time. Implants need adequate bone density to integrate successfully with the jaw. If your bone has deteriorated, a bone graft, ridge augmentation, or sinus lift may be needed to rebuild the foundation before implants can be placed.

All three procedures address bone deficiency in different areas of the jaw. A bone graft rebuilds density in areas where bone has been lost. Ridge augmentation improves the overall shape and volume of the jawbone. A sinus lift is performed in the upper jaw to add bone and create sufficient depth for implants.

Recovery time varies depending on the type and complexity of the procedure performed. Minor procedures, like tooth extractions, typically involve a few days of mild soreness. Discomfort resolves quickly with proper care. More involved procedures, such as bone grafts or sinus lifts, require a longer healing period. It can take several months for the grafted bone to fully integrate.

Soft foods are your best option in the days following oral surgery. Soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and scrambled eggs are all good choices. Avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy foods until your dentist gives you the go-ahead to reintroduce them. Hot foods and drinks should also be avoided right after surgery. Stay well hydrated, but avoid using straws during recovery.
