Dental Emergencies

A dental emergency is any situation involving significant pain, damage, or infection. Common examples include severe toothaches, cracked or broken teeth, a knocked-out tooth, a lost crown or filling, swelling around a tooth or jaw, and signs of infection. Act quickly. A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved if you receive treatment within an hour. Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root, and rinse it gently with water. If possible, place it back in the socket or keep it moist by storing it between your cheek and gum or in a small container of milk. Call us immediately. We will do everything we can to get you in right away.

An untreated dental infection can spread beyond the tooth to the surrounding bone and neighboring teeth. In serious cases, it can spread to other parts of the body. Swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing, and a spreading ache are all signs that an infection may be advancing. Dental infections do not resolve on their own and should never be left untreated.

Emergency treatment focuses on relieving pain and stabilizing the tooth or affected area. Depending on what was done, additional treatment may be needed. For example, a tooth that receives a root canal during an emergency visit will typically need a crown placed at a follow-up appointment.
